Nate is the firstborn of the Fisher siblings, and arguably the one whose life was most drastically changed by his father’s death. Until then, he hadn’t dedicated his life to much of anything - except, perhaps, keeping far away from his family.

J’ai découvert la télésérie Six feet under dans le temps des Fêtes. Les deux premières saisons. Une rafale mortelle, genre 26 épisodes en 3-4 jours. Comment faire devant tant d’échos aux préoccupations, aux similitudes, à l’extrême finesse ciselée des textes et le jeu impeccable? Et la musique? Le générique vaut à lui seul le prix du forfait mensuel à HBO. Je riais. Je pleurais. C’est incroyable combien ça vient me chercher quelque part. Ça réveille plein de choses. C’est noir, anticonformiste au cube, cynique, dysfonctionnel, hyperréaliste, cru, délicat, direct, sans fards, touchant, fabuleux, coup-de-poing. This is so normal.

On y côtoie la joie, la haine, la peine, le doute, le désespoir, la honte, l’amour, l’ennui, la colère, l’injustice, la passion, la crainte, and what else, will you tell me for Christ sake, you greedy nazi fuck?

episode 1 — “Pilot”

Los Angeles, Christmas Eve, Nathaniel Fisher, owner of the Fisher and Sons Funeral Home, is killed when a municipal bus broadsides his new hearse. The tragedy casts a pall on the holiday homecoming of son Nate (who works for an organic food co-op in Seattle), as he must not only deal with the death of a father, but the fragile egos of mother Ruth (who has been having a secret affair with her hairdresser, Hiram), brother David (a closet homosexual seeing a black policeman named Keith), and a sister Claire (a rebellious high-schooler who receives the bad news after dropping crystal meth with new boyfriend Gabe). The only good thing to happen to Nate is Brenda, a passionate women he met on the plane, just before learning of his father’s death. At home, David eschews the talents of his young mortician, Fredrico, to personally undo the damage of his dad’s accident. The ensuing funeral leaves the family’s deepest emotions exposed, and calls into question some of our more absurd rites of passage. At the gravesite, David is not amused by the advances of Matthew Gilardi of Kroehner Service Corporation, a funeral- home conglomerate looking to buy out the Fishers business. As for senior Nathaniel, he may have been laid to rest - but has plenty left to reveal to his family.

Chaque épisode démarre par la mort d’une personne. On suit alors les événements qui suivent la mort de cette personne, son histoire personnelle, ses proches. Parallèlement, on suit les tourments et les interrogations de la famille Fisher. L’anticonformisme est manifeste dans le choix des victimes : on assiste à la mort d’un enfant de six ans avec une arme à feu, celle d’un bébé, une ex-star du porno se fait électrocuter par un chat jaloux, une mort par masturbation au citron, etc. Tout cela montré sans voyeurisme.

Un autre tabou brisé par Six feet under est celui de l’homosexualité. Alan Ball le scénariste, ouvertement gay, a décidé de montrer des scènes d’amour entre hommes très explicites. Comme il l’expliquait lors d’une entrevue, contrairement aux autres séries où le gay de “service ” est un joyeux drille épanoui qui fait rigoler toute la galerie, Ball a choisi de montrer l’indécision, les doutes, la culpabilité qui assaillent David Fisher tout au long de la série, les difficultés à s’assumer.

Ces derniers jours, j’apprivoise la troisième saison dont les dvd viennent à peine de sortir. Et la cinquième et dernière saison qui commence dans moins d’une semaine. Arrrrgh !
